Taking plenty of quality breaks during your work day can reduce mental fatigue. That way when you get back to working you will feel refreshed and able to increase your productivity.

It’s best to take small breaks throughout your workday and some prefer to work in longer blocks. It is usually agreed upon to take at least a 15 minute break for every 2 hours you are working. Ways to make the most out of your breaks can include these 5 things.

  • Read a book – Reading fictional stories helps us to let go of stress and enhances connectivity in the brain. Spending break time to get in a few pages can help boost your mood and your brain power.
  • Nourish your body – Have prepared snacks ready, but don’t overdo it. It has shown that berries, walnuts, dark chocolate, yogurt and green tea all impact brain processes that enhance productivity.
  • Get outside – You can’t go wrong with fresh air and sunshine.
  • Take a walk – A short walk during your break could help to reduce stress and lead to more productivity when you return to your work. Justin Rhodes, associate professor of psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign states, “When we exercise, blood pressure and blood flow increase everywhere in the body, including the brain.”
  • Look at pictures of baby animals – No, really. This study in Japan showed that it really makes you happy. Turns out that attention focus may increase after viewing cute images. What’s cuter than baby animals? Not much!

2. Let the Music Play

As a teenager I remember always having the radio on, even while I did my homework. Music never seemed to distract me. In fact, it often motivated me to push through my work. Listening to music while working seems like it would distract yet more and more studies are showing quit the opposite.

Research is showing that listening to music can enhance memory and learning.

When our brain is less stressed, we can work more efficiently and concentrate longer on tasks. Some find that classical music helps them focus while others play isochronic tones background throughout their workday.

3. Adjust the Lighting

Working in an insufficiently lit room has been shown to decrease your work output when compared to working in an area that is well lit. Studies reveal that dim lighting could make us less intelligent and cause blocks in memory and learning. This productivity is increased further by using natural light or a full spectrum lamp.

Our bodies also know the difference from natural and artificial lights and you will feel more upbeat and alert when you are surrounded by natural light as opposed to an artificial source.

Think about how difficult it is to focus on reading when there is not enough light. Personally I could lose up to 30 minutes a day because of insufficient lighting.

While none of these ways to boost productivity will stop time or give you the ability to clone yourself, they will however make your work day flow easier.
